Vaishnaw Confirms Tata's Rs 27,000 Crore Jagiroad Semiconductor Plant to Begin Production in FY 2026-27

Union Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on May 30, 2026, after meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, that Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test's Rs 27,000 crore OSAT facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam, is on track to begin chip packaging operations during the current financial year. The plant, being built by Tata Electronics on the site of the erstwhile Nagaon paper mill, will be India's first indigenous greenfield semiconductor assembly and test plant.

Scale and Capabilities

The Jagiroad facility will manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day using advanced packaging technologies: wire bond, flip chip, and Integrated System in Package (ISIP). Products will serve automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and consumer electronics markets globally. At steady state, the plant is expected to generate approximately 15,000 direct jobs and 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs — a major economic boost for Assam and the Northeast region.

NIELIT Semiconductor Training Institute

Vaishnaw also confirmed that a proposed National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) dedicated to training professionals in semiconductor manufacturing technologies is progressing well. The institute will play a key role in building a skilled chip workforce for the Northeast and beyond, tapping Assam's substantial pool of engineering graduates. Discussions between the minister and CM Sarma also covered railway infrastructure projects for Assam, including track expansion across 1,300+ km and redevelopment of 50+ stations.

Strategic Importance for Northeast India

The Assam OSAT is strategically important for two reasons beyond its manufacturing output. First, it demonstrates that semiconductor investment is not confined to Gujarat and the western industrial corridor — it is spreading to India's under-industrialised Northeast. Second, Qualcomm has already selected the Jagiroad facility as its manufacturing partner for Snapdragon-based automotive system-in-package modules, which will be produced here once Phase 1 is commissioned.
