Tata Electronics has commenced assembly and test operations at its greenfield OSAT facility in Jagiroad, Assam, representing the most significant practical milestone yet in India's semiconductor manufacturing ambitions. The facility, backed by a total investment of approximately USD 3 billion from Tata Electronics and supported by India Semiconductor Mission incentives, is designed to handle chip packaging, module assembly, and electrical test across multiple product categories. The Jagiroad plant is India's first facility of this type and scale, ending a long-standing gap in the domestic semiconductor value chain where chips designed or fabricated elsewhere had to be exported for packaging before returning to Indian electronics assemblers.


Facility Capabilities and Package Types

The Jagiroad OSAT plant is equipped to handle a range of semiconductor package types reflecting the diversity of customer demand it must serve. Wire bonding lines handle traditional SOIC, SSOP, and QFP packages used in consumer electronics and industrial control applications. Flip-chip assembly equipment handles BGA and advanced packages for mobile application processors and connectivity chips where the performance requirements of wire-bonded packages are insufficient. The facility includes multi-chip module assembly capability for the automotive SiP programmes being developed in collaboration with Qualcomm, and dedicated test floors equipped with high-end test handlers and probe systems compatible with major automated test equipment platforms. Clean room standards throughout the facility meet the requirements for AEC-Q100 automotive qualification.

Workforce and Regional Economic Impact

The Jagiroad facility is expected to employ over 27,000 people at full ramp, making it one of the largest private sector employers in Assam and a transformative economic development for the state. A large proportion of the workforce consists of operators and technicians trained through a dedicated programme developed in collaboration with local vocational training institutes and the Assam government's skill development agency. Tata Electronics has committed to prioritising local hiring and has established a training centre adjacent to the plant to continuously develop new cohorts of semiconductor manufacturing workers. Engineering and supervisory roles are being filled with a combination of experienced semiconductor professionals relocated from other Tata facilities and new hires from Indian engineering universities.

Supply Chain Integration and Customer Onboarding

The Jagiroad facility's commercial value depends on attracting a stable base of customers who will qualify it as an approved packaging source. Tata Electronics is simultaneously pursuing customers in several segments. In mobile electronics, Apple is the anchor relationship through Tata's iPhone assembly operations, and there is a natural opportunity to bring chip packaging for Apple supply chain components into the Jagiroad plant over time. In automotive, the Qualcomm SiP partnership provides an anchor programme. Industrial and defence segments are being developed through relationships with Indian electronics companies seeking a domestic chip packaging option. Each customer qualification process takes six to eighteen months depending on programme complexity, and Tata is managing multiple parallel qualification programmes to build customer density before full volume ramp.
