Micron Technology's assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat has surpassed 14 million chip packages per week, reaching a key volume milestone that demonstrates the facility's maturation into high-throughput operations. The plant, which underwent commercial inauguration in early 2026, packages DRAM and NAND flash devices for global Micron customers. This output level positions the Sanand facility as one of the highest-throughput OSAT operations in India.

Micron Technology's semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat has crossed the 14 million chip packages per week production milestone, a figure that the company's management cited at SEMICON India 2026 as evidence that the Indian facility has fully transitioned from ramp-up mode into sustained high-volume operations. The plant, which received its commercial inauguration in early 2026, handles the packaging and electrical testing of DRAM memory modules and NAND flash storage devices that are then shipped to customers and to Micron's own module assembly operations globally. At this weekly throughput level, the Sanand OSAT is producing over 700 million packaged chips annually, making it by a considerable margin the highest-volume semiconductor assembly operation in India.
The Sanand facility handles multiple generations of Micron's DRAM and NAND product families. DRAM packages produced at the facility include LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X memory used in smartphones and automotive infotainment systems, as well as DDR5 modules destined for server and PC platforms. NAND flash packages cover UFS and eMMC embedded storage formats used in mobile devices, automotive systems, and industrial computing. The facility also packages 3D NAND wafers from Micron's US and Japanese fabs in QDP and TDP stacked configurations that deliver the higher capacity per package required by data-intensive applications. The diversity of the product mix is a testament to the facility's technical breadth and its position as a mainstream production site rather than a dedicated facility for a single product category.
Micron's Sanand facility employs approximately 500 direct employees and engages a significantly larger number of workers through facility management, logistics, and technical service contracts. The majority of the direct workforce consists of operators and technicians trained specifically for semiconductor assembly and test roles, a skill set that was extremely rare in India prior to the facility's establishment. Micron has invested in training partnerships with local technical institutes and the Gujarat government's skill development bodies to build a sustainable pipeline of qualified workers. The facility's operational leadership includes a mix of experienced Micron employees from its global operations and locally recruited Indian engineers who have developed deep expertise through on-site training and rotations to Micron's facilities in Malaysia and Singapore.
The Micron Sanand plant's successful high-volume ramp has had several positive effects on India's semiconductor manufacturing credibility. It demonstrated that an international tier-one semiconductor company could successfully build and operate a production OSAT facility in India within a planned timeframe, addressing scepticism about India's manufacturing execution capability that had persisted following earlier failed chip fab attempts. Micron has not announced specific capacity expansion plans for Sanand but has indicated that it views India as a growing production location within its global network, and industry observers expect that the facility's success will inform future decisions about additional investment. The plant also sets a benchmark for the newer OSAT facilities being built by Tata Electronics, Kaynes, and CG Power.
