The HCL-Foxconn semiconductor joint venture in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh is advancing its compound semiconductor and sensor assembly line after the facility's foundation was laid in February 2026. The plant, backed by a INR 3,706 crore investment under the India Semiconductor Mission, targets gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, and silicon carbide device packaging alongside MEMS sensor assembly. First equipment installation is expected by early 2027.

The joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn's semiconductor subsidiary, operating under the entity Vamasundari Investments, is making steady construction progress at its compound semiconductor and sensor OSAT facility in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The project received Union Cabinet approval in May 2025 and the foundation-laying ceremony was conducted in February 2026, with the structure now rising on a site near the Yamuna Expressway in the region adjacent to the Jewar International Airport development corridor. The INR 3,706 crore investment is supported by India Semiconductor Mission incentives, and the facility is designed to be India's first plant dedicated to packaging compound semiconductors rather than conventional silicon devices.
Compound semiconductors, which are made from combinations of elements such as gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, gallium nitride, and silicon carbide rather than pure silicon, are essential for applications where conventional silicon cannot deliver adequate performance. Gallium arsenide and indium phosphide devices are used in high-frequency RF amplifiers for 5G and satellite communications, as well as in laser diodes and photodetectors for optical fibre networks. Silicon carbide and gallium nitride devices are used in high-power, high-efficiency applications including electric vehicle inverters, solar power converters, and rail traction systems. MEMS sensors, which the Noida facility will also handle, are used in automotive safety systems, consumer electronics, and industrial monitoring. India imports virtually all of these device categories, and the HCL-Foxconn facility will be the first domestic option for assembly and test of compound semiconductor packages.
Foxconn holds a 40 percent stake in the joint venture through its subsidiary Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development, with HCL holding the majority position. Foxconn contributes its manufacturing operations expertise developed through decades of running high-precision electronics assembly at scale, while HCL contributes its understanding of the Indian industrial and regulatory environment, customer relationships with Indian defence and telecom companies, and site management capability. Technology for the compound semiconductor assembly processes is being sourced through a combination of equipment supplier training programmes and technology transfer arrangements with Foxconn's existing compound semiconductor operations in Asia. The joint venture has not announced a specific foundry partner for bare die supply but is in discussions with leading compound semiconductor wafer producers.
The Greater Noida location provides access to the Delhi NCR industrial ecosystem, proximity to defence electronics customers in the region, and logistics connectivity via the developing Jewar airport. India's 5G infrastructure build-out, its electric vehicle market expansion, and its defence electronics indigenisation programmes all represent growing domestic demand for compound semiconductor components. The timing of the HCL-Foxconn facility, with equipment installation targeted for early 2027 and commercial operations in 2027 to 2028, aligns with the period in which these demand categories are expected to reach meaningful scale. The facility will also complement the silicon-focused OSAT plants being built by Tata Electronics, Kaynes, and CG Power by covering device categories those plants are not equipped to handle.
