Fujifilm has signed a photoresist and specialty semiconductor chemicals supply agreement with Tata Electronics for the Dholera fabrication plant, making it one of the first Japanese specialty materials companies to commit to direct supply to an Indian wafer fab. The agreement covers DUV photoresists, anti-reflective coatings, and edge bead remover chemicals required for the fab's 28nm process. Fujifilm will also explore establishing a local formulation and blending operation in India to reduce supply chain lead times.
Semicon Hunt -> partnership -> Fujifilm / Tata Electronics

Fujifilm, the Japanese diversified technology company with a significant and growing specialty semiconductor materials business, has formalised a photoresist and chemicals supply agreement with Tata Electronics for the Dholera wafer fabrication plant. The agreement makes Fujifilm one of the first Japanese specialty semiconductor materials companies to commit directly to supplying an Indian wafer fab, and it positions Fujifilm's imaging chemicals expertise at the centre of India's first commercial semiconductor manufacturing operation. The relationship was anticipated by a broader MoU that Tata Electronics signed with multiple international partners at its September 2026 SEMICON India event, and the Fujifilm photoresist agreement now advances from intent to contracted supply.
Photoresist is a light-sensitive liquid coating that is applied to a silicon wafer before each lithography exposure step. The portions of the resist exposed to the scanner's light source undergo a chemical change that allows them to be selectively removed, revealing the underlying wafer surface for subsequent etch or deposition steps. The formulation of photoresist is extraordinarily precise, as subtle variations in its chemical composition affect the resolution of features that can be printed, the edge roughness of pattern lines, and the etch resistance of the remaining resist during processing. For 28nm production, which is the initial process node at Dholera, deep ultraviolet immersion lithography photoresists of a specific formulation class are required. Fujifilm has extensive experience formulating DUV photoresists for foundries at these and more advanced nodes, and its supply provides the Dholera fab with a qualified materials source from day one of trial production.
Beyond photoresist itself, the agreement covers bottom anti-reflective coating materials applied below the resist layer to minimise reflection of the lithography exposure light from the wafer surface, which would degrade pattern quality if uncontrolled. Edge bead remover solvents are used to clean the photoresist from the wafer edge, where it would otherwise create particles during subsequent handling. These supporting chemicals are as critical to process yield as the resist itself, and sourcing them from the same supplier as the photoresist simplifies the chemical management system and quality control programme at the fab. Fujifilm supplies integrated packages of these materials as a system for its foundry customers in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, and the Dholera agreement extends this systems-level supply approach to India.
A particularly significant element of the Fujifilm-Tata agreement is the exploration of establishing a local photoresist formulation and blending operation in India. Photoresist is currently imported into India entirely from Japan, South Korea, and Germany, with lead times of several weeks and the associated inventory carrying cost and supply chain risk. A local formulation facility, even if sourcing base chemicals from overseas, would reduce effective lead times to days and allow faster response to process development changes at the fab. Fujifilm's willingness to explore this investment signals confidence in the sustained volume that the Dholera facility and future Indian fabs will generate, and would be a significant step toward building a domestic semiconductor specialty chemicals industry alongside India's wafer fabrication capacity.
