ASML and Tata Electronics have commenced the operational phase of their MoU signed in May 2026, with the first lithography scanners delivered and installed at the Dholera fab site. The MoU also covers engineering talent development, including ASML training programmes for Indian technicians, and supply chain localisation for scanner support components in India. The partnership is foundational to Tata's ability to operate a world-class wafer fab.

ASML, the Dutch maker of lithography equipment and the only company in the world capable of producing extreme ultraviolet scanners, has moved from the MoU stage to active delivery and installation at the Tata Electronics Dholera fabrication plant. The partnership, formalised through an MoU signed in May 2026, encompasses supply of deep ultraviolet lithography scanners appropriate for the fab's initial 28nm and mature node production processes, technical support infrastructure, engineering talent development for Indian technicians and engineers, and collaborative work on supply chain localisation for scanner maintenance components within India. The progression from signed agreement to working equipment on the fab floor in the span of a few months reflects the urgency that both parties are applying to the Dholera timeline.
Lithography is the process by which circuit patterns are projected onto a light-sensitive coating on the wafer surface, defining the structures that will become transistors, interconnects, and other device features. The precision required is extreme: at 28nm, the features being printed are smaller than a human cell and must be positioned to nanometre accuracy across the full 300mm wafer diameter. ASML's DUV scanners for the 28nm and older nodes use immersion lithography, in which a thin film of water between the lens and wafer increases effective optical resolution. The scanners are among the highest-value single pieces of equipment in any fab, and ASML's technical involvement extends well beyond installation to ongoing field service, process optimisation, and scanner uptime management throughout the fab's operating life.
A specific component of the ASML-Tata MoU is a structured programme to develop Indian engineering talent in lithography operation and maintenance, a specialisation that is extremely rare outside the Netherlands, Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States. ASML will provide training for Tata Electronics engineers at its facilities in the Netherlands and at the Dholera site, covering scanner operation, routine maintenance, advanced diagnostics, and reticle management. This knowledge transfer is strategically important because lithography uptime is the single largest driver of fab output efficiency and yield, and having a trained Indian engineering team on site reduces the fab's dependence on flying in ASML field engineers from overseas for every issue. ASML has also indicated plans to grow its India service team to support not only Dholera but also any future fab investments in India.
The MoU's supply chain localisation component involves identifying components and sub-assemblies used in scanner maintenance and repair that can be sourced from Indian precision engineering companies. These include mechanical parts, optical mounts, vacuum system components, and electronic control modules that meet ASML's stringent quality specifications. Localising even a modest portion of scanner support procurement would create a new category of high-precision manufacturing demand for Indian suppliers and reduce the foreign exchange cost and lead time associated with importing all service parts. The relationship between ASML and Tata Electronics is expected to deepen as the Dholera fab scales and as India's semiconductor ambitions attract additional wafer fab investments that will create further demand for ASML's equipment and services.
