Advanced Micro Devices has formalised its Bengaluru operation as its single largest global design and engineering centre, backing the designation with a USD 400 million investment commitment over the next several years. The campus, which currently employs approximately 3,000 engineers, is on a trajectory to reach 6,000 engineers by 2028. The expansion covers facility infrastructure, equipment, and talent acquisition across semiconductor design, verification, AI software, and embedded systems disciplines. AMD's Bengaluru centre now outranks the company's engineering locations in the United States, Poland, Canada, and Taiwan in terms of headcount, making it strategically significant at the corporate level and not merely a regional presence.
AMD's Indian engineers are responsible for substantive contributions to the company's most advanced products, not derivative or support work. The centre leads architecture and design work on AMD's 3D V-Cache chiplet stacking technology, which significantly boosts gaming and compute performance by vertically integrating additional cache memory on processor dies. Bengaluru engineers also contribute to the RDNA and CDNA GPU architectures used in AMD's Radeon graphics cards and Instinct AI accelerators respectively. For data centre AI, the centre is involved in the design of the MI400 series of GPU accelerators that compete with NVIDIA's H-series in the training and inference market. The breadth of this mandate makes AMD Bengaluru a peer of the company's established US design teams rather than a satellite development unit.
AMD's expansion plan requires adding roughly 3,000 engineers to the Bengaluru centre over three years, which will create competitive pressure on other semiconductor employers in the city including Qualcomm, Intel, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments. The company has indicated it will hire across experience levels, from fresh graduates of IITs and NITs to senior architects with fifteen or more years in chip design. AMD is also working with several academic institutions to develop a pipeline of engineers with skills in GPU microarchitecture, HPC programming, and AI hardware design. The presence of such a large and technically demanding employer raises the overall quality benchmark for semiconductor engineering roles in the city and improves the attractiveness of India as a design destination for other global companies.
AMD's USD 400 million Bengaluru commitment follows similar large-scale design centre investments by Intel, Qualcomm, and Apple in India over the past three years. These investments collectively signal that India's semiconductor design ecosystem has crossed a threshold of maturity that makes it a default rather than an optional destination for global chip companies planning capacity. For AMD specifically, concentrating design leadership in Bengaluru also provides cost and talent diversification benefits relative to its US-centric historical model, and the time zone alignment with Europe and partial overlap with US working hours supports distributed design team collaboration across the company's global centres.
